Plavix (generic name: clopidogrel) is a popular but pricey antistroke medication that has been widely prescribed on the assumption that it is safer on the stomach than aspirin. But studies have shown that, while aspirin may be slightly less effective at preventing strokes, it is far less likely to cause serious stomach damage than Plavix.
A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that patients taking Plavix were 12 times more likely to develop stomach ulcers than patients who took aspirin in combination with a heartburn drug. The study's lead author said that physicians should consider prescribing aspirin and a heartburn medication instead of Plavix because more-expensive Plavix "might really damage the stomach."
