Fosamax has been linked to "DEAD JAW"

Fosamax (generic name: alendronate) belongs to a family of drugs known as bisphosphonates that are used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Although Fosamax and other bisphosphonates are designed to strengthen bone, for reasons not yet understood they may have the reverse effect and bone may become weakened. This condition is osteonecrosis of the jaw, or ONJ. It is also referred to as "Dead Jaw".

The Food and Drug Administration and Novartis, the manufacturer of fosamaxbisphosphanates used in cancer chemotherapy, issued a warning letter to health care professionals on September 24, 2004.

When ONJ is present, bone in the jaw fails to heal after minor trauma such as a tooth extraction. This causes bone to be exposed, leading to infection and fracture. Patients may require long-term antibiotic therapy or surgery to remove dying bone. OMJ sufferers may experience loosening of teeth, severe infections, swelling, drainage, exposed jaw bone and numbness.
